In the Netherlands and Germany there is growing interest in the Roman past of these countries. In archaeological research into this past, reconstructions of Roman buildings and structures deserve to have a more prominent place. Kees Peterse (1959-2020) felt that archaeological research is only complete when we have an understanding of the building process and the resulting 3D reconstructions. Only then can you really ‘touch’ the building. Reconstruction research must therefore be a logical and integral part of archaeological science.
Kees Peterse’s passion lay in studying the traces and fragments found, searching for the coherence between these in their original context, and then using the insights gained to shape evocative reconstructions of Roman buildings and structures. This required both a scientific mindset and a solid understanding of architecture.
Through this website, we want to impart his passion to new generations of archaeologists and offer them a helping hand in the continuing journey along this path. This website describes 10 reconstructions of civil and military buildings and structures in the Netherlands and Germany, as well as the associated research methods and considerations.
